Design icon, the Barcelona chair was created by architect and industrial designer German Ludwig Mies van der Rohe for the German Pavilion at the International Exhibition in Barcelona in 1929. It is one of the most famous chairs in the world of furniture and decoration and what few know is that called model MR90, not Barcelona chair as we know it today. Van der Rohe created is chair with its ottoman and the matching side table.
This chair was originally made from polished stainless steel and leather pigskin but due to the huge success of the design, adjustments to mass-production were made in 1950. Since the mid-twentieth century until now, the Barcelona chair has become an object of exposure due to its originality, ergonomics and stability.
Apart from designing the Barcelona chair, Ludwig Mies van der Rohe is also well known for leading the major German school of art, design and architecture: the Bauhaus. It was between 1930 and 1933, when it was closed.
